Election Notes from Eliana DeFrancesch
St. John the Baptist Parish Clerk of Court
The New Year is here and with it a new beginning. We have witnessed the inauguration of our new President and the appointment of his staff.
We are thankful to all the Poll Workers and Voters in St. John the Baptist Parish that helped to make the elections process run smoothly. The Presidential Election set new records with 21,783 voters casting their vote, out of 29,653 registered voters with a remarkable 73.46% turnout.
More voters are taking advantage of the “Early Voting” period in each election. Three Thousand One Hundred Fifty voters or 10.5% voted early in the presidential election.
Many voters have told me they like the new AVC voting machines. The Clerk of Court’s Office website www.stjohnclerk.org has a short video for those who need to brush up on the new voting machines. We had some voter errors, voters leaving without casting their vote, causing an “under vote”. This was not the fault of the voting equipment which operated perfectly. The new voting machines are large computers on wheels.
The Clerk of Court’s Office will continue to have a deputy clerk at each precinct location to assist voters.
Remember to thank the candidates for there hard work and thank them for giving you a choice. Thank the poll workers and the Registrar of Voters and Clerk of Court’s staff for making your “right, power and privilege to vote” a simple task in St. John the Baptist Parish elections.
St. John the Baptist Parish has another election scheduled for April 4, 2009. We will be electing a new Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge to replace Judge Thomas Daley, who was elected our new District Attorney on October 4, 2008. Voter turnout for that election was 11,219 with a 38.69% of the registered voters. You can see that voter turnout, in comparison to the November election that the October one was low.
Let us remember that the local elections are the backbone of the parish. On April 4, 2009, besides the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judgeship, we will be voting for a number of propositions that effect all of us in the parish. Proposition 2 will provide the much needed renovates of the Edgard and Eastbank Courthouses.
I hope that you will take the time to participate in your precious “right to vote”.
